In 303 HE, the Battle of Brink Island was fought on the Brink between the Aeropans under Duke Skyheed and the Sky Pirates under Captain Phoenix during the Aeropan-Sky Pirate War.
Why did it happen?
When the Precursor’s civilisation was destroyed by the Metal Heads in 3000 BHE, they left Jak and Daxter’s planet unfinished at what became known as the Brink. By the beginning of the fourth century HE, several city-states had been established along the Brink, with the most notable being Aeropa City, which was ruled by Duke Skyheed and Chancellor Ruskin. Following Captain Phoenix’s defection from the Aeropan navy in 300 HE, the Aeropans began searching for the Eco Core, which was connected to the planet’s core and was the source of all eco. In 303 HE, the Eco Core became unstable and created massive storms around the planet, which made the world’s atmosphere grow volatile and eco channeling by individuals painful. At that time, Jak, Daxter and Keira departed Haven City towards the Brink, where they hoped they would find a way to restore the Eco Core and end the storms raging across the planet.
Who was involved?
The Aeropan forces at Brink Island numbered 2 Airships: the ACS Behemoth and the Hellcat IV. The ACS Behemoth was the capital ship of the Aeropan Navy and could carry a complement of 1,500 crewmembers and several dozen Aeropan Fighters. In contrast, the Hellcat IV was a light, maneuverable craft but unsuitable for heavy combat. According to one source, “The Hellcat is a version of the ship Jak and Daxter stole from Baron Praxis, modified by Keira” (Birlew, 2009, p.32). The Sky Pirate forces at Brink Island numbered 31 Airships: 30 Sky Raiders and the Phantom Blade. The Sky Raider was a light attack craft that was equipped with Ground Attack Rockets to assault Aeropan transports and fighters. The Sky Pirate plan at Brink Island was to ambush the ACS Behemoth, acquire its eco, and cripple the Aeropan Navy.
What happened?
Upon arriving at the Brink, Jak, Daxter and Keira were ambushed by Captain Phoenix and Mister Klout aboard the Phantom Blade. When their eco tank was punctured during the encounter, they landed their Hellcat IV on Brink Island. After repairing the Hellcat IV, Jak, Daxter and Keira received a radio transmission from the ACS Behemoth requesting assistance from an attack by Sky Pirates. After manoeuvering around Brink Island, the Hellcat IV engaged the Sky Pirates in aerial battle. As the Sky Pirates began to focus their attacks on him, Jak executed a loop to avoid a Sky Raider locked onto him. After he destroyed 10 enemy airships, Jak found himself with 17 more in his rear. He subsequently executed several barrel rolls and a slip turn to appear in the rear of the Sky Pirates and destroy them. With most of their airships lost, the remaining Sky Pirates retreated. Jak pursued and destroyed all but two of their airships, ending the battle.
What changed as a result?
The Battle of Brink Island was an Aeropan victory. In the aftermath of the battle, Duke Skyheed thanked Jak, Daxter and Keira for assisting him. Noticing that the Hellcat IV was badly damaged, the four travelled to Aeropa City, where Skyheed and Ruskin gave Jak the Eco Seeker, which could point to any major eco source. However, the Eco Seeker was subsequently stolen by Captain Phoenix, who also kidnapped Keira. Eventually, Jak, Daxter and Keira allied with the Sky Pirates after learning that the Aeropans had been experimenting with Dark Eco to create a Dark Warrior Program, similar to Haven City’s. Following two sieges at Far Drop and Aeropa City, Duke Skyheed was defeated at the Aeropan Research Rig, after which the Eco Core was brought back into harmony, thereby ending the Eco Shortage Crisis.
