About Brad's Battle Maps

Brad Barrett is based in Blenheim, New Zealand. He creates maps of historical battles from all four eras of military history: Ancient, Medieval, Gunpowder and Modern. He has drawn battles fought in Europe, the Middle East, East Asia (China and Japan), South Asia (India and Vietnam), Africa, the Americas and Australasia (Australia and New Zealand).

As of 2021, Brad has done three presentations on military history to audiences in Blenheim. On 22 May 2019, he did a talk to people at Gateway Housing Trust on the Eight Classical Manoeuvres of Warfare as outlined by David Chandler in his book The Art of Warfare on Land. On 24 November 2019, in association with Steve Austin, he exhibited and did a talk on ten of his battle maps that were of relevance to the people of Blenheim at the Marlborough Museum (pictured above). Finally, on 19 May 2021, Brad hosted a third presentation at Maataa Waka on Maori Warfare in Aotearoa New Zealand with five battles from New Zealand history presented as case studies.

Brad first became interested in drawing battles from Military History after reading R.G. Grant's book Battle: A Visual Journey Through 5,000 Years of Combat in 2009. The book featured battle maps and detailed descriptions of all the key engagements fought between 2450 BCE to 2003 CE. The first battle maps that Brad drew were ancient battles, but since 2017, he has been encouraged by his support workers to draw battles from more recent parts of history. For a list of sources that Brad used while researching his battle maps, see References.

All of Brad's battle maps have been designed on Microsoft Publisher. If you have any questions regarding them, please go to the Contact part of this website and send Brad a message.
